Ethiopia is not only a historical cultural wonder, but also a land of diverse and unique natural attractions, among which the following are the attractive features.
AWASH NATIONAL PARK
Awash National park is the oldest and comparatively the only well developed wildlife reserve in Ethiopia. The park is popular among visitors and is the nearest to the National Capital Addis Ababa. The wildlife consists mainly of beisa oryx greater and lesser kudu, the endemic sub-species somemerring’s gazelle etc. There are also over 400 species of birds in the park. The park can be visited at all times of the year and has accommodation and camping sites.
THE SEMIEN NATIONAL PARK & MOUNTAINS (THE ROOF OF AFRICA)
The Semien National park is found in Northern Ethiopia about 100 kilometers from the Town of Gondar. The Semien highlands constitute one of the major mountain massifs in Africa. The region includes many summits above 4,000 meters and culminates in the highest point in Ethiopia, the Ras Dashen, at 4,543 meters (14,904 feet) the fourth highest mountain in Africa. The Semien mountain massif is the home to walia ibex. Semien Red Fox and chelada Baboon all endemic to Ethiopia.
ABIYATA – SHALA NATIONAL PARK
Abiyata – Shala National park has been reserved for qquatic bird species like the great white pelicans and greater and lesser Flamingo. The small island in Lake shala are the breeding ground and is said to be the home top Africa’s most important breeding colony of great white pelicans.
Netchsar National Park
Netchsar in Amharic means white grasses and refers to the central grassy plains which was established as a sanctuary for the Swayne hartebeest, hippo , zebra, buffalo , Nile crocodile, lion , leopard and other endangered species.
Omo National park
Stretched along a vast expanse of land adjacent to the Omo River , the omo national park is situated in a true wilderness of south –west Ethiopia and is declared to be one of the richest wild life sanctuary’s in East Africa. The park is home to big animals like lion, buffalo, Elephant, giraffe, zebra, eland ,tiang and many more other animal species, also over three hundred species of birds are also found hear both aquatic and terrestrial including the endemic black winged love bird.
Mago national park
The mago national park is located adjacent to the omo national park in the south –eastern part close to the Kenyan border. Along with the omo is the only park in Ethiopia where herds of buffalo and Elephant can be seen. A verity of antelope species such as the Lesser Kudu, Greater Kudu, Tiang, Lelwel’s Hartebeests, Oryx and Grants Gazelle inhabit the valley. The Mago valley lies in one of the most culturally diverse arias of the country.
Gambella National park
Gambella National park lies in the Western part of the country along one of Ethiopia’s important rivers, the Baro . The natural environment of this national park has contributed to the presence of a wide variety of birds and animals such as the Elephant, Hartebeest, Buffalo, Roan antelope and in or along the banks of the Baro is the home of the Nile crocodiles and hippos.
SENKELLE SWAYNES HARTEBEEST SANCTUARY
The sanctuary is primarily established to protect swaynes Hartebeest, which is and endemic and endangered species. The site is located some 300 kms on Addis Ababa – Arbaminch Road. Other wildlife types found here are orbi, greater kudu and warthog.
ERER FAFAN ELEPHANT SANCTUARY
The East Harerge Elephant sanctuary is the largest wildlife conservation area in the country. Here are found the diminishing endemic sub-species of African elephants. These elephants seasonally move north and south along the Erer Fafan Valley.
DEBER ZEIT LAKES
The lakes of Deber Zeit have been the most popular recreation and resort centers for residents of Addis Ababa and the surrounding areas. These lakes offer water sports (boat riding, surfing e.t.c) bird seeing opportunities.
THE BLUE NILE FALLS
The breath taking Blue Nile Falls is found about 32 kms from Bahir Dar. It is 400 meters wide during the flood season, drops to a depth of 45 meters, and sprays water droplets to visitors standing on the opposite edge of the gorge near the falls, visitors could also see the 17th century Portuguese bridge.
BALE MOUNTAIN
Bale Mountain National park, which is found in south Eastern Ethiopia, is an area of high altitude plateau that is broken by numerous spectacular volcanic peake, beautiful alpine lakes and rushing mountain streams that descend into deep rocky gorges. The mountains are most famous as home and refuge of the endemic Mountain Nyala and Red Fox. Both these mammals exist in reasonable numbers, and visits to the Gaysay area, and the seniti plateau will enable visitors to see beautiful animals. Menelik’s Bushbuck is found on the high plateau and could easily be seen from Dinsho and Gaysay park stations.
SOF OMAR CAVE
Sof Omar natural cave located about 557 kms from Addis is the most spectacular and unique sight formed by the web Rever, which made a course through the limestone inside the cave. The cave is considered as one of the world’s most extensive underground caverns. The sof Omar cave is an enchanting place for adventure tourists, geomorphologies and cave scientists. Sof Omar is also a place of worship for Ethiopian Muslims.
Babile rock column and stone piles
Babile rock column and stone piles is a unique site where visitors are fascinated by natures arrangement of rocks. These are found on either side of Harar – Jijiga road.
DANAKIL DEPRESSION
Surreal and otherworldly, the Danakil Depression is one of the lowest, and hottest, places on earth coming in at 100m (328ft) below sea level and with temperatures regularly topping 500c (1220F). for those hardy enough, this geological wonderland is a magical place of Dali-esquelandsapes featuring vistas of swirling orange twisted rock and lava lakes. Tours can be arranged from Addis Ababa or Mekele.
KONSO VILLAGES
Despite modernity’s slow encroachment, the konso people have stayed true to their cultural heritage, proudly preserving their unique maze-like village architecture and way of life. Some of the top places to visit in the region are the town of konso itself and the villages of Busso and Machekie.
THE RIFT VALLEY LAKES
The Ethiopian Rift Valley separates the western and the Eastern highlands and escarpments and contains chains of lakes like Ziway, Langano, Abiyata, Sahala, Awassa Abaya and Chamo.
ABYATA – SHALA LAKES
These two Rift Valley Lakes are very near to Lake Langano and are noted for their abundance of bird life, described by experts as the most important breeding colony of birds in East Africa. The two lakes are separated by a small strip of land (about 3 kms) and could be seen from “view point”, just a few meters from the park headquarter.
LAKE ZIWAY
The northemmost and largest lake in the chain is one of the freshwater Rift Valley lakes of Ethiopia. Lake Ziway extends over 434 square kilometers measuring 25 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide. It has a maximum depth of four meters and is located at an elevation of 1,846 meters. There are five islands known as Debre Tsion, Debre Abraham, Debre Gelila, Debre Sina and Gete Semane. Most notably Debre Tsion (Tullu Gudo) is home to a monastery said to have housed the Ark of the Covenant around the ninth century.
